The Billboards

by Paul Zeitzew

Most Clevelanders have seen them. Many have passed by, ignoring them. If anything, some have mildly questioned them, speeding past at 60 mph in a 50 mph zone. But, up until recently, no one seemed to care what they said, or why they said it! The pieces in question are the two billboards on I-90 at the west end of the bridge over the Cuyahoga River. They are on the walls of cold storage warehouse. Driving west on the expressway the sign has Stars of David with the caption, "SUPPORT ISRAEL, MAKE ALIYAH NOW." Aliyah is the term for emigrating to Israel. On the other side, driving east, there is no caption, but a picture of a European Jewish boy, hands in the air; and a Nazi soldier, rifle raised.

A few articles in the Plain Dealer have brought up the concerns of what this means. The Cleveland Jewish News has reported on it extensively. Mr. Gerrity, the owner of the building, claims to be a devoutly religious man and feels the only safe place for Jews is in Israel. His comment about the boy and the soldier were to the effect that it can happen again, and sooner than we think. Mr. Gerrity emphatically

states he is not anti-Semitic. Many Jews and non-Jews are not sure how to take his meaning on the signs.

In the Sunday, January 5 Plain Dealer, it was reported that Mr. Gerrity had a meeting with city officials and Sam Miller of Forest City Enterprises. Mr. Gerrity agreed to have an addition made to the sign which will read, "This is not an anti-Semitic message." His name and Albany address will be included in the disclaimer. Mr. Miller is going to pay for the additional wording.

Half of a recent Prime Time program was devoted to the rise of neo-Nazism in Germany, and the Americans who are helping spur that cause on. They regard Hitler as being too "humane," the Holocaust as a invention of the Jews and never a reality. The emphasis on this program was on anti-Semism but other minorities were not ignored.

A divided Germany was no threat to world peace. A unified Germany is another story. A unified Russia was some protection. A Russia divided into many small countries has no protection from a foreign invader. In view of the happenings in Europe and the David Duke/Pat Buchanan syndrome in the United States, will another Holocaust really occur?

If you are not Jewish and have read thus far, you are probably asking, why report anti-Semitism in the Gay People's Chronicle? Because, wherever anti-Semitism rears its ugly head, homophobia is sure to follow!▼
